Counting and cardinality
Overview

Counting and cardinality are a central focus in kindergarten. Students learn what a number is, what it can represent, and they connect quantities to numerals. This is heavy-duty work for five year-olds, and they need many experiences to build this understanding. Learning stations should be designed for all of these different concepts and skills. If students do not have rote counting to five or ten it is important for students to work with the teacher or aide while they are in these stations, so they do not reinforce incorrect counting sequences.
